Ben Wallace has become the first driver to confirm his participation in Renault Sport Racing’s new Clio Cup UK championship.

Ben, 20 from Southport / Lancashire, will race for new team Student Motorsport,

He has several seasons’ car racing experience in the VW Racing Cup and British GT and no stranger to the British GT championship.

Ben commented: “The new Clio Cup is a really exciting looking championship for UK motorsport and I was immediately interested in when it was first announced, especially being on the SRO British GT package.

“I’ve worked with John Paul Latham (Student Motorsport Team Manager) before and he was also very keen to do it so the deal came about pretty quickly!

“The costs are right, the format is right and the car is so well thought through – it’s going to appeal to drivers of all ages and abilities.

“The track record of the people running the championship also makes me confident that nobody will have a performance advantage – it will be 100% down to the teams and drivers and that’s a challenge I relish.”

Clio Cup UK will use the all-new ‘fifth generation’ Clio Cup race car. Student Motorsport has already ordered two of the cars and that number could rise further.

John Paul Latham added: “We’re thrilled to have Ben on board with us…Ben is going to bring vital driver experience to the team, and aside from the focus on winning races we’re also going to utilise his experience to help our other drivers and with our team personnel inspire the next generation of motorsport professionals.

“When we considered taking Student Motorsport racing, we couldn’t think of a better place to start than with Clio Cup UK. The championship is so well supported, professionally run and exposed to a wide-ranging audience which is key to supporting our partners.

Team manager JP Latham was keen to stress that while students will gain experience with the race team, they will be overseen by experienced personnel.

Clio Cup UK gets under way in mid-May with the first of its seven race weekends in 2020 – these will include with the British GT Championship and two more overseas (Magny-Cours, France and Barcelona, Spain).
